HC pulls up MCD for poor state of city roads

The poor state of roads of Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) has come under the scanner of the Delhi High Court which slammed the civic agency for its non-serious attitude towards repairing potholes. "The roads of the national capital are bumpy, full of potholes and uneven and which are perennial source of giving nightmarish experience to the vehicle owners...," Justice Kailash Gambhir made an observation in a bail order. "Use of sub-standard and inferior quality of material by the contractors results in the poor construction of roads. But the complicity of the MCD officials also cannot be ruled out," the court order added. Pointing to the fact that the city is going to host the Commonwealth Games 2010, Justice Gambhir said, "What image the Capital of the country would be projected if the roads are not built as per international standards and remain in such poor conditions." The observations of the court came while hearing an anticipatory bail petition filed by a contractor after the MCD took a suo motu cognisance against him for constructing poor roads in the city. Justice Gambhir granted anticipatory bail to contractor Rakesh Tyagi and directed him to furnish a bond of Rs 20,000 and a surety of like amount. Tyagi was further directed by the court to fully co-operate with the police for investigation of the allegations against him. On a complaint of Rajender Nagar Residents Welfare Association, the MCD in October took suo motu cognisance against the contractor for building sub-standard roads in the area.
