MADRAS HC ORDER NOTICES TO MINISTER, SECRETARY 12/23/2008 Madras High Court ordered notice of motion to Tamil Nadu Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam and State Home Secretary Ms Malathi, on a writ petition filed by 23 residents of Angammal Colony in Salem, seeking restoration of the possession of the place, they were in earlier. When the petition came up for hearing, Justice Ms K Suguna, ordered notice of motion for maintainability and directed the minister, Chief Secretary, DGP, Collector, City Police Commissioner and two other officials of Salem district. In their petition, Vadivel, Ms L Kokila and 21 others sought a direction to the authorities to restore possession of the place from where they were forcibly evicted on February 8 2008 by the police and officials under the instructions of the minister. The petitioner submitted that they were residing in the area of 20,000 sq ft for about 80 years. It originally belonged to Mr Srinivasa Gupta, proprietor of A N S Jewellery in Salem. In 1959 Mr Gupta had gifted the land to them. On January one, a group of more than 100 henchmen of the minister led by Parapatti Suresh, Vice-President of Salem Municipality and the minister’s nephew, Gym Ramu, the DMK Municipal Councillor, Sidhanantham an Ex-councillor belonging to AIADMK and Congress men went to colony and asked them to vacate the area as it was purchased by the minister, the petitioners contended.
