Delhi HC Restrains GAIL Executives From Going On Strike 1/6/2009 The Delhi High Court restrained the executives of the Public Sector Undertaking GAIL (India) Ltd from going on indefinite strike for higher wages from tomorrow. Justice Anil Kumar refrained the executives of the state-run gas company from going on strike as it would cripple the already fragile economy. GAIL’s managing director U D Choubey had approached the Delhi High Court to refrain the officers of the company from going for strike or any other activity which would harm the functioning of the company. The executives, 2,200 in number, are part of the Oil Sector Officers Association (OSOA), which has given an indefinite strike call from tomorrow to protest against a pay increase smaller than what was demanded by the organisation. Mr Choubey said companies like GAIL had been approaching courts for restraint orders to keep fuel supply lines operating. The High Court had earlier stayed a strike in fuel retailing companies like Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum. Officers were responsible for managing the aviation refilling points at all the airports in the country. Their withdrawal from duty would within minutes disrupt air services, Mr Choubey said. Similarly, officers were in charge of dispatching auto and cooking fuel as well as natural gas through pipelines. A strike in GAIL, the monopoly gas distributor and marketer, would have a great impact on users in the power and fertiliser industries, he added. Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), the nation’s largest oil and gas producer, would also approach the court in a day or two for a similar order of ‘injunction’ for the smooth functioning. UNI
