According to petitioner Virender Kumar Ohri, the trial of Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren took over 30 years to conclude and Mr Soren continued to attend Parliament and election meetings and also became a central minister despite being declared a proclaimed offender in a murder case involving his own personal assistant Shashinath Jha. The petitioner prayed to the court to put the trial of all influential persons on fast track courts and the investigations monitored by the DGP concerned. The High Court should monitor the progress made in the investigation and trial of such persons and it should be made mandatory to complete the investigations within 90 days, the petitioner said. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Mr Justice P Sathasivam granted time to the Union Government to respond to the suggestions made by Prashant Bhushan, counsel for the petitioner when counsel for the Government pleaded for more time.
