SC Grants Bail To Todi Brothers In Rizwanur Suicide Case 1/17/2009 The Supreme Court granted bail to Kolkata-based businessman Ashok Todi and his brother Pradip Todi who are facing allegations of abetting the suicide of Rizwanur Rehman, son-in-law of Ashok Todi. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam directed that the two be released on bail on their furnishing bail bonds for Rs 1 lakh each along with two sureties each of the like amount. The apex court also directed the appellants to surrender their passports to CBI if they have not surrendered the same. The two would not change their present address without prior notice to CBI. The apex court also directed that the two accused would be at liberty to approach Kolkata High Court for permission to go abroad. The Todi’s were opposed to the marriage of Ashok’s daughter Priyanka Todi to Rizwanur and the latter committed suicide in 2007. Ashok Todi had surrendered on December 1, last year while his brother Pradip Todi had surrendered on December 8, last year and both are in jail since then. The apex court also directed the two accused not to interfere with the trial of the case and not to try to influence or communicate with any witness in the case. The CBI would be at liberty to seek cancellation of the bail if either of the two try to influence any witness. The investigation in the case is almost complete and charge sheet has already been filed in the case. Trial of the case was stayed by the Supreme Court on September 22, last year. Senior counsel L Nageshwar Rao and Ranjeet Kumar appeared for the petitioner while Additional Solicitor General Amarender Sharan appearing for CBI strongly opposed the bail application. UNI
