Delhi HC Refuses To Shift 128 Year Old Mosque 1/19/2009 Rejecting the plea of the residents of Aravali apartments (Alaknanda) to shift a 128-year-old mosque elsewhere, the Delhi High Court made it clear that the devotees will take care not to congest the public place. Justice Ravinder Bhatt while delivering the verdict asked the police to ensure that the rights of the devotees who come there to perform Namaz are protected. Counsel for the Wakf board, Nazmi Waziri told the court that the mosque situated at the Aravali Apartments was about 128-year-old and was the property of the Wakf board. He contended that the mosque could not be shifted to another site as desired by the residents as it existed there before the locality came into existence. The locality was made around the mosque and hence the congestion in the locality, Mr Waziri said. The residents had urged the court that due to the weekly prayers (Namaz) on Fridays, there is a huge crowd of devotees who come to the locality causing security threats. The petitioners prayed before the court to direct the Wakf board to shift the religious structure to an alternate site. The Court, however, dismissed the petition, while asking the police to maintain law and order situation in the locality and ensure the prayers are conducted smoothly especially on Fridays. UNI
