Lawyers here staged a rally in protest against Indian cricket team touring Sri Lanka and urged the Central Government in New Delhi to intervene and stop alleged atrocities on Tamils in the island nation. E-mail Article Printer Friendly Text-Size "The Government of India must immediately stop the tour of cricket team that is proposed to be sent to Sri Lanka in this juncture. Sending the cricket team is a betrayal of Tamilians cause. Therefore our main demand is to immediately stop of the war in Sri Lanka against Tamils and immediately stop giving assistance to the Sri Lankan army in any manner," said C Murugesan, a lawyer and a Human Rights activist. The touring India team will play five one-day internationals (ODIs) and a Twenty20 international in Sri Lanka in the coming weeks. The protesting lawyers also said that Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon was supposed to hold peace talks with Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa and they claimed that he did not make any progress in resolving the war situation in the island nation. They further added that ban on LTTE should be lifted and they should be called to the negotiation table. India, which has intervened in the past, has indicated that it may not step in this time. New Delhi lists the LTTE as a terrorist group, as do the United States, the European Union and others. (ANI)
