Cop Penalized For Inaction In Suicide Case 22 Jan 2009, 0535 hrs IST, TNN BEGUSARAI: In a belated move, Khagaria SP Kamal Kishore Singh on Wednesday ordered departmental proceedings against SI Ajit Bihari, investigating officer of the case pertaining to the suicide of a 17-year-old eve-teasing victim in Bihar’s Begusarai district last week, for his inept handling of the case. Singh, who is in additional charge of Begusarai district as Begusarai SP P Kannan is on leave, told TOI on Wednesday he visited the girl’s village Samastipur on Tuesday on the directive of state DGP D N Gautam following a news-story published in TOI. “During inquiry, I found all the five accused were at large even six days after the case was lodged,” Singh said and added he has directed the local police to arrest all the accused within 48 hours. Five youths allegedly tried to molest Sonam, an Intermediate student, while she was returning home from a flour mill last Tuesday. Her father, a petty shopkeeper, made village elders sit at a meeting on Wednesday to punish the lechers. However, the accused and their parents defiantly refused to accept the panchayat’s ruling and said that the girl was of “loose character”. Unable to bear the ignominy, the brotherless girl, eldest among six siblings, consumed poison the next day. Ironically, local policemen did not even visit the village for the next two days while the five youths strutted around. Meanwhile, hundreds of students of Usha Bhujungi College, from where Sonam was doing her +2, held a demonstration before the Sahebpurkamal police station on Tuesday. They demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
