Vadodara Contract Killer Surrenders In Surat Court 23 Jan 2009, 2236 hrs IST, TNN Text: SURAT: The fourth contract killer, who had been on the run since 2004 in the sensational murder of an electronics showroom owner in Varachha, surrendered before the 11th judicial court here on Wednesday. Mamu alias Mohammed Rafiq Bambaiya, hailing from Vadodara, was taken into custody by Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) officials, who initiated proceedings. Vipul Bhalala, working partner of Omni Electronics located at Rajhans Complex on Varacha Road, was shot dead from point blank range by four contract killers while he was parking his bike on December 14, 2004. Investigations based on the complaint filed by the watchman on duty led to the arrests of killers Anil Antya, Raju Dandekar and Vilasrao. "Mamu, living at Kabil Apartments of Nagarwada in Vadodara city, continued to give Surat DCB the slip, though they raided the place often," said a source. "Of the three arrested, sharp shooter Antya is still in jail," the source added. According to sources in DCB, Bhalala was killed as he was suspected of having leaked information about illegal business activities to customs. "The person who got Bhalala killed had apparently suffered heavy losses, when information on consignments of electronics goods, rough diamonds and valuable diamond powder coming into the city was leaked to the customs. As a result, Dubai mafia had been given contract to kill Bhalala," a source said. DCB officials investigating the murder suspected involvement of Girish Bodra, living in Dubai, and underworld dons Chotta Shakil and Faeem Machmach behind the contract killing. Police interrogated Bodra and put him through lie detection tests, which he failed. Later, they initiated procedure for narco tests, which Bodra challenged in court and obtained a stay. However, after Mamu's surrender, police now hope to solve the four-year-old contract killing.
