Lawyers of district courts across the country on Tuesday went on strike to protest changes in the CrPC which allow police not to arrest accused in offences punishable up to seven years in jail. "Lawyers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have abstained from appearing in the courts. We would intensify our agitation further until the revocation of the amendments," Secretary Delhi Bar Association Jaiveer Singh Chauhan said. He claimed that advocates of about 15 High Court have also joined the nation-wide protest. Lawyers had struck work four times last month on similar demands, putting thousands of litigants to convenience. The strike is in favour of the society as the proposed amendments in the statute will give criminals a free run and deteriorate the law and order situation, Co-ordination Committee All Bar Associations of Delhi spokesperson Rajiv Khosla said. Matters listed in the courts were adjourned as the lawyers did not appear before the presiding officers, the bar leaders said, adding that they were also getting large-scale support from litigants. A car rally has also been organised here by the lawyers to press for their demands for the withdrawal of the changes in the Criminal Procedure Code. A Federation of Bar Associations had also been formed by them to spearhead their "unified protest." The bar leaders fear that the amendment, doing away with the mandatory arrest provisions, would remove fear from the minds of criminals who would misuse the amendment under the garb of personal liberty.
