SC Order Fallout: 600 Employees Seek Job Security 2/16/2009 Threatened with the prospect of losing jobs following a recent Supreme Court order for demolition of a portion of a popular five-star resort in the city, about 900 employees, their associates and family members staged a rally in the city, seeking job security forthwith. They called on Governor S S Sidhu, chief minister Digambar Kamat and Opposition BJP leader Manohar Parrikar, besides others seeking their intervention within the frame work of the constitution to protect their livelihood in the wake of the apex court ruling. The processionists included students of the hotel Cidade de Goa’s Academy of Culinary Education, a unique training school for chefs. The school building is included in the number of structures to be demolished as per the court order. They had submitted separate memoranda under the banner of Affected Employees and Associates of Cidade De Goa to the authorities separately. While the Chief Minister promised to study the legal aspects of the case, Mr Parrikar called for enacting a legislation to protect their jobs in the recession. Education minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, representing Taleigao constituency housing the hotel complex, also told the processionists that the government would do all it can to prevent demolition to save their jobs. The memorandum mentioned that court order for ‘demolishing an integral part of the resort will make it extremely strenuous for the organisation to conduct its business, thus affecting its ability to provide for all its human resources.’ ‘It is our earnest plea to you, to intervene within the constitutional framework and help us to avoid this demolition, which will save us our jobs and livelihood,’ the memorandum stated. The Supreme Court directed the government to demolish the structures on a specific plot of about 1,000 square metres within three months for violating certain clauses in the agreement between the government and the Resort, reached when the plot was acquired by the government. The order, if implemented, would result in loss of over 40 rooms, the health-club, a large banquet hall and other facilities. The management maintained that they had to obey the court order which may result in pruning of the workforce. UNI
