Court Fines Amar Singh For Not Deposing In Cheating Case Dated : 20 Feb 2009, 1904 hrs IST, Source : IANS NEW DELHI: Text: A court here imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Friday after he failed to appear before it once again in a case he has slapped against a man who allegedly tried to extort money from him. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja pulled up Amar singh for not deposing in the court despite several notices and directed him to depose on Wednesday. Amar Singh's counsel told the court that he was out of the city due to his political and personal works. On earlier occasions, he had given medical reasons for Amar Singh's failure to appear before the court. The court then said, "The leader has on every occasion cited one or the other reason for not deposing, which is not in the favour of justice." The court noted that he had also sought an adjournment of the hearing on December 12. Amar Singh registered the case against a man for allegedly trying to extort money from him by allegedly fixing a Supreme Court judge in a case against his party leaders. The special cell of Delhi Police on Amar Singh's complaint registered a case of cheating and impersonation on June 4, 2007, against Barun Kumar Verma, 41, a resident of Lajpat Nagar. Verma allegedly claimed to be a law officer and said he had high connections in the judiciary and could sort out the cases. He allegedly asked for Rs 50 million for settling the case and said he could convince Justice A R Lakshmanan, who was hearing a corruption assets case against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
