President Pratibha Patil has cleared the transfer of the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court H.L. Gokhale as the new Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. He will assume charge at a time when the Bar is agitated over the police attack on lawyers on February 19. Mr. Justice Gokhale (59), was initially appointed Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in January 1994 and transferred to the Gujarat High Court in February 1994. He was appointed permanent Judge in January 1995 and transferred to the Bombay High Court in February 1999. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on March 7, 2007. The President has also cleared the appointment of the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice J.B. Koshy, as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Mr. Justice Koshy (61) was appointed permanent Judge of the Kerala High Court in January 1996 and acting Chief Justice of same court in December last. Justice S.R. Bannurmath (61), judge of the Karnataka High Court, who has been cleared for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in June 1997 and permanent Judge in June 1999. Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad (59), senior most judge of the Patna High Court, has been cleared for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He was appointed a permanent Judge of the Patna High Court on November 8, 1994. He was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on November 21, 1994. He was transferred back to the Patna High Court on September 10, 2001. He became Acting Chief Justice of the same court since December 17, 2008. Other appointments Others, whose appointments were cleared are: Justice Deepak Verma, Judge of the Karnataka High Court as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court and Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Judge of the Gauhati High Court as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. The warrants of appointments in respect of all these judges are expected to be issued in a day or two.
