Calcutta HC: Rs 166 Crore Defamation Suit Against Guinness Book Of World Records Dated : 28-02-2009 Source : UNI KOLKATTA : TEXT : The Calcutta High Court summoned Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) officials for not complying with an order directing them not to print or sell the records book without describing the feat of an Indian circumnavigator, in connection with a Rs 166 crore defamation suit against the former. Justice Kalyanjyoti Sengupta asked six officials of the GBWR to appear before the bench on March 17 to explain why the order was not carried out or why the records book failed to file any report on its inability to comply with the order. Earlier, the court restrained the GBWR from further printing or selling of the 2004 and 2005 editions of its annual records book without describing the feat of Saloo Chowdhury and his wife Neena as the first persons to have circumnavigated the earth by car. ‘Saloo Chowdhury had, in 1994, circumnavigated the world in 39 days using a Nissan Sunny car which he had himself purchased. ‘For the first time in the history of motor sports, I had circumnavigated the globe. This is a world record and I did it by defeating a British Army team,’Mr Chowdhury told UNI. ‘But they deleted my name from the 2004 and 2005 editions of the records book. Therefore, I have slapped a Rs 166 crore defamation suit against the GBWR for not carrying out the court order and giving me the due recognition,’ he added. The court also directed Mr Chowdhury to deposit Rs one crore before it till the dispute over his claim was settled.
