Chennai, March 04: Terming as "illegal" the indefinite strike by Madras High Court advocates, Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy Wednesday said the Supreme Court should initiate contempt proceedings against them. The strike by lawyers, who are demanding action against police for the February 19 violence in the High Court, was against the 2003 Supreme Court verdict which barred advocates from striking work, he claimed. "Despite an appeal by the Chief Justice of India, the advocates have not resumed work. The SC should initiate contempt proceedings against them," Swamy, who was assaulted by some lawyers, besides throwing some rotten eggs at him in the court on February 17, said. "They are not respecting the Supreme Court verdict," he added. Alleging that "five per cent advocates" had "Naxalite and LTTE" orientation, he said they should be debarred from the legal profession. Several persons, including a Madras High Court judge, Justice Arumugaperumal Adityan were injured in a clash between police and lawyers on February 19. Police made a lathicharge in an attempt to quell the violence. Swamy, a vocal LTTE opponent, suspected an LTTE-Al Qaeda nexus behind attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan. He said the US and Sri Lanka should assist Pakistan in probing the incident.
