SC directs Centre, state govts to establish Juvenile courts 3/2/2009 The Supreme Court directed the Centre and all state governments to set up Juvenile courts in every district of the country within four weeks. Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathashivam directed all the Chief Secretaries of states to file compliance reports within eight weeks. The petitioner Sampurna Behrua in his PIL has alleged that the state governments were not complying with the provisions of Juvenile Justice Act according to which a juvenile court must be there in every district. New Delhi has already two children courts in its nine districts. Uttar Pradesh is also lagging behind in setting up children’s court. Only minors and teenage offenders can be tried in these courts and there is no provision for sending these juveniles to jail and they can sent only to Children’s homes. The petitioner has also alleged that lack of children’s courts is the main problem leading to delay in disposal of criminal cases pending against children and teenagers in the country. UNI
