The Karnataka High Court today directed Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) not to cut any tree in the famous Lalbagh Garden Area without permission from the Tree Authority.
The order was passed on a PIL seeking directions for changing the alignment of Metro Rail as it would pass through Lalbagh under the existing plan.
Justices N K Patil and V Jagannathan, constituting the Division Vacation Bench, asked BMRCL not to cut standing trees in the Lalbagh Area without taking permission from the Tree Authority.
Severe protests marked the BMRCL’s plans to lay lines inside the sprawling garden, considered one of the best in the country.
The corporation which had begun work, had already cut nearly 50 trees inside the Lalbagh, which was built by erstwhile Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan over 300 years ago.
Advocate General Uday Holla, who appeared on behalf of the State Government and BMRCL, submitted they had sought the permission of the Tree Authority for cutting standing trees and would continue work on the project after permission was given.
