The Kerala High Court registered a suo motu case against patenting of the deity of Attukal Temple in Thiruvananthapuram and also its sobriquet women Sabarimala. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice S R Bannurmath and Justice Kurian Joseph, directed to implede Attukal Devi Trust as a respondent in the case.

The suo motu action was taken on the basis of a fax letter sent by one R S Praveen Raj, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, to the Chief Justice.

In the letter, he alleged that patenting means that these were business projects and not in tune with religious purpose. He also pointed out that patenting religious matters should be viewed seriously.

He also demanded cancellation of the patents relating to other religious institutions.
