AP Govt petition in SC on Muslim quota for PG medical admissions The Andhra Pradesh Government has again filed an interlocutory application in the Supreme Court in the case concerning quota under the AP Reservation in Favour of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes of Muslims Act, 2007 for admission to post-graduate medical courses in the State. Earlier, the state filed special leave petitions (SLPs) in the Supreme Court against the order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court under which all admissions to BC-E category were stayed. The Supreme Court permitted the state government, by an interim order, to go ahead with counselling of students for admission and directed that no admissions shall be made pending further orders, according to a release here today. In the present application, the state government submitted that counselling sessions for PG Medical Courses were held, following interim orders of Supreme Court, for BC-E students also. Thirty-eight students belonging to socially and educationally Backward Classes among Muslims were counselled. It submitted that formal admissions could not be given to this category in view of the Supreme Court orders. The state government pleaded that if the students who had received counselling were not permitted to attend the classes they would be put to serious prejudice and suffering. It pleaded for permission to the students to attend the classes, subject to the result of the pending proceedings. It contended that concerned universities and other authorities may not permit the students from taking up the examinations for lack of attendance or on the ground that they were only counselled but not admitted to the course.
