Expressing serious concern over the drought situation prevailing in several parts of the country, the Supreme Court today directed the Centre, States and Union Territories to provide all assistance to the Expert Committee headed by Mr T Ramaswamy to enable it to find a short term solution to the acute shortage of water in the country.
A bench comprising Justices Markandey A Katju and A K Ganguly issued the direction on a PIL by an advocate M K Balakrishnan who had sought direction to the government to work out a long term strategy to solve the problem of water scarcity.
The Union Government had appointed an expert committee on the directions of the Supreme Court to devise and develop a mechanism to make the sea water fit for human consumption.
The apex court had taken serious note of water shortage in the country which sometimes creates serious law and order problem resulting in riot like situation.
The apex court today also directed the registry to send the copy of the order to the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories for immediate compliance.
