The Supreme Court refused to give urgent hearing to a PIL seeking directions to Maharashtra government, as well as the Centre, not to permit gathering of a large number of people on the occasion of Dahi Handi function to mark Lord Krishna’s birth anniversary, Janmashtami in Mumbai in view of the epidemic of swine flu in the country. The petitioner stated that the problem of swine flu, was also very serious in Mexico, where they were able to control it to a large extent only after the authorities in that country banned gathering of large number of people at one place. A Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan, however, said there was no urgency in the matter and it should come up for hearing in the normal course. Shiv Sena has, meanwhile, decided not to celebrate the Dahi Handi function this year.
