The Allahabad HC on Saturday dismissed a writ petition filed by a Kanpur resident seeking ‘monitoring’ of the investigation in connection with an FIR lodged against Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh. A division bench of Justice Sunil Ambawani and Justice Virendra Singh turned down the plea of Shivakant Tripathi, who had registered the FIR against Singh on October 15, observing ‘‘there appears to be no ground for our intervention at this early stage.’’ Social activist Tripathi had lodged the FIR, accusing Amar Singh and his wife Pankaja of amalgamating companies allegedly owned or run by them for converting black money into white. Tripathi argued that the people named in the FIR could ‘‘use their influence in affecting the investigation’’. After the FIR against Singh was lodged in Kanpur, the case docket was promptly sent to West Bengal Police as some companies named in the FIR were based in Kolkata. In a counter-complaint with Ballygunge police station in Kolkata, Amar accused Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati, Navniet Sehgal (secretary to CM), BSP leaders Baburam Kushwaha and Akhilesh Das, ADG (law and order) Brij Lal, police inspector Dinesh Tripathi and complainant Shivakant Tripathi of hatching a conspiracy to defame him and damage his and his family’s reputation. He also furnished footage of a series of alleged sting operations which, he claimed, showed how the alleged conspiracy against him was hatched.
