A delegation of Indian Bar Council, led by its chairman Suraj Narayan Prasad Sinha, appreciated the initiatives taken by Gujarat to implement qualitative changes for expediting justice delivery system, especially the evening courts, which had remarkably reduced the number of pending cases before the court. The delegation, comprising office-bearers of various state bar councils and eminent lawyers from various states, met Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Admiring the initiative of the evening courts, Mr Sinha said Gujarat has really created better legal infrastructural facilities for justice delivery system. Expressing his resolve for achieving the goal of zero pendency, Mr Modi said because of the constructive and positive response from the justice delivery system, burden of pending cases has been reduced. The evening courts have remained successful in reducing the burden of pending cases, he added. The Chief Minister briefed them about the Digital Law Library and Bar Law Library, education imparted at Gujarat Law University in drafting government laws, training facilities for the judges and educational facilities offered to the judges at Forensic Science University. The members also welcomed the state’s pioneering legislative move of making voting mandatory in local body’s elections and sought details from the Chief Minister about Mandatory Voting and Provision of Negative Voting. Mr Modi said the mandatory voting would help strengthen the rights of the voters. He added that political parties would have to select good candidates in order to further consolidate the ideals of democracy.
