The Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) directed the Ananthapur Deputy Commissioner of Labour to ensure reinstatement of 185 ousted workers of the Ultratech Cement Factory in Tadipathri.

Hearing a petition filed by BJP State President B Dattatreya and others, SHRC Chairman B Subashan Reddy and APSHRC Member E Ismail said ‘the Commission is of considered view that a prima facie case of violation of human rights of the factory workers at the instance of the factory management has been meted out.’ The SHRC directed the Anantapur District Collector to attend to needy rehabilitative measures to the workers and their dependent family members ‘who were all poor, hapless and suffering due to deprivation of their properties, which has been compulsorily acquired for settling up the above said cement factory and now their jobs and the very livelihood.’ The SHRC attention was drawn to removal of the contract workers on January 11, 2010 after they tried to form trade union, a fundamental right guaranteed under article 19 (i) (c) of the Constitution.

Lands of the workers had been taken over by way of compulsory acquisition for setting up the cement factor promising permanent jobs either to themselves or to their kith and kin, to compensate for loss incurred because of compulsory acquisition and that since last 12 years they not been confirmed in their posts, they complained.
