Baroda Bar Association President suspended for professional misconduct 7/16/2008 In a significant move, the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) today suspended the licence of Baroda Bar Association (BBA) president Narendra Tiwari for two years for alleged "professional misconduct." A three-member disciplinary committee, headed by Gujarat Bar Council president Rajendra Trivedi, found Mr Tiwari guilty of professional misconduct on a petition filed by the estranged wife of a city-based builder, who alleged that Mr Tiwari being her counsel had a "nexus" with her husband and received donations in cash and kind from him for BBA in violation of the legal norms. Immediately after the news reached here this afternoon, BBA called for an indefinite strike and the lawyers boycotted the works, protesting against the BCG's action against BBA president Mr.Tiwari, a known Congress leader. Rejecting all the allegations against him as "politically motivated" and "baseless", Mr Tiwari told UNI that he would appeal before the Bar Council of India (BCI) against the decision of the state body now being "run" by BJP activists. Mr Tiwari also denied that he had appeared for the builder Jashwant Chauhan in any court cases in Gujarat nor had he taken any donations from him to weaken the case of his wife, who is engaged in a legal battle with her husband for the last couple of years for maintenance and other compensation. Mr Tiwari, who was recently re-elected as president of the BBA for the third consecutive term, alleged that he was tragetted by the BJP leaders in the Gujarat Bar Council after they failed to beat him in the BBA elections.
