A proposal to give equal status to all Election Commissioners is part of the electoral reforms which is presently under consideration of a Parliamentary Standing Committee on personnel, public grievances, the Rajya Sabha was informed. Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj said in a reply that the proposal forwarded by the Election Commission is under consideration as part of the electoral reforms. In reply to another question, the minister said the Presidential Orders on delimitation have come into effect in all the 22 states and Union Territories except Tripura and Meghalaya from February 19. In Tripura and Meghalaya, the delimitation order shall take effect on March 20 after the election to the legislative assembly. Every election to the House of people and legislative assembly from all states and union territories shall be held on the basis of the new delimitation, except in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Jharkhand, where the existing delimitation orders will apply, he said.
