Arrested Suresh Kalmadi to be produced in special CBI Court

Sacked Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chief Suresh Kalmadi will be produced in a special CBI Court in Delhi today. CBI spokesperson Dharni Mishra told reporters yesterday that Kalmadi was arrested for conspiracy for favouring a private firm based in Switzerland by awarding the contract of timing, scoring and a result system at an inflated cost of 141 crore rupees. In a related development the CBI arrested two other senior officials of CWG Organising Committee, Surjeet Lal and A S V Prasad who have been taken into custody for favoring the Swiss firm. Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken has said the Indian Olympic Association IOA has been asked to elect its new Chairman. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function he said, if the IOA fails to act, his ministry will seek the advice of the Attorney General in this regard and will intervene accordingly. AIR correspondent reports that organising committee Secretary Lalit Banot and Director General V.K. Verma have already been arrested. The Congress has suspended Suresh Kalmadi from the party after he was arrested by the CBI in the CWG scam. Congress party spokesman Manish Tiwari while reiterating his party's commitment to weed out corruption added that appropriate action will be taken against Kalmadi at an appropriate time as a Member of Parliament belonging to the ruling party.
