Law Minister Meets with CEC - Discusses Consultations on Electoral Reforms

 

The Union Minister for Law & Justice, Dr. M Veerappa Moily, today met with the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners for the finalization of the program of the National Consultation on Electoral Reforms to be held on 2 – 3 July 2011 in New Delhi and the seventh and last Regional Consultation to be held in Guwahati on 12 June 2011. 


The National Consultation is to focus on the followings topics: 

• Decriminalization of politics
• Decommunalization of Elections
• Financing of Elections and Auditing of Finances of Political Parties and allied matters
• Conduct, Regulation and Better Management of Elections
• Adjudication of Election disputes
• Media and Elections


There will be technical sessions on all the above topics, which will have the participation of Ministers, Members of Parliament, political party representatives, civil society representatives, and others. 


The National Consultation is expected to be addressed by dignitaries including the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Lok Sabha, the Union Law minister, the UPA Chairperson, the NDA Chairperson, the Chief Election Commissioner, and the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha. The Vision Statement on Electoral reforms - based on the seven Regional Consultations, will be presented to the Prime Minister on the occasion. 


The Plenary session on 3 July 2011 is expected to be addressed by the Vice President of India, the Union Finance Minister, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, , the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Chief Election Commissioner.
