Electoral reform proposal by December: Moily

Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily on Sunday announced the committee on electoral reforms will submit the draft proposal to the government either in the monsoon session of the parliament or latest by December.

After chairing the seventh regional consultation meeting on electoral reforms in Guwahati, Moily told reporters that relevant issues were discussed in the meeting and the committee will submit its draft proposal by December.

Discussions on the seven most important issues - criminalisation of politics, financing of elections, conduct and better management of elections, regulating political parties, auditing of finances of political parties, adjudication of election disputes and review of the anti-defection law - were held in the day long meeting attended by the Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

"We should ensure that the constitutional aspirations are put in place through this unique experiment of regional consultation and we shall form a bill," the Union Law minister said.

"Our aim is to eradicate corruption in the root itself and the focus will be to give to voice to the common people," Moily said.
