With regard to the setting up of various Benches of the Supreme Court of India the Government has said that the Law Commission, in its 229th Report, has recommended that:
(1) A Constitution Bench be set up at Delhi to deal with constitutional and other allied issues.
(2) Four Cassation Benches be set up in the Northern region/ zone at Delhi, the Southern region/ zone at Chennai/ Hyderabad, the Eastern region/ zone at Kolkata and the Western region/ zone at Mumbai to deal with all appellate work arising out of the orders/ judgments of the High Courts of the particular region.
Giving this information in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Law & Justice, Shri Salman Khurshid said that the opinion of the Attorney General was obtained and the matter was referred to the Chief Justice of India. He had informed that after consideration of the matter, the Full Court in its meeting held on 18th February, 2010 unanimously resolved that the recommendations of the Law Commission cannot be accepted.
