Bandh called by lawyers hit normal life in western Orissa

Normal life was hit in western Orissa as shops and business houses remained closed on Sunday during a bandh called by lawyers demanding a permanent High Court Bench in the region, while police used mild force to disperse agitators staging a road blockade. Vehicular traffic on National Highway No 6 was disrupted as the agitating advocates, who also want withdrawal of Pal Commission set up to look into their demand, staged a blockade close to the bridge over river Mahanadi near Sambalpur, police sources said. As the situation started turning chaotic, police used mild lathicharge in order to disperse the agitators and restore normalcy, they said adding that the bandh remained peaceful without any major incident. Shops and business establishment in the city were closed in response to the bandh call and vehicular traffic on the road was low. The response was almost complete in Bargarh where markets remained closed and vehicular traffic came to a grinding halt, but the bandh had little impact in districts like Sundergarh and Jharsuguda, police sources said. In Bolangir and Deogarh district, the bandh evoked mixed response with most of the shops and business establishments keeping their shutters down. The lawyers, who have been demanding establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court in the region, have also rejected the formation of the Pal Commission by the state government to look into the issue.
