As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, a total number of 121 cases in 2014 and 315 cases in 2015 were registered under the category of insult to the modesty of women (section 509 of IPC) occurring in public transport system which includes cases of sexual harassment of women commuters in the cabs.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued notification on 28th November, 2016 regarding fitment of vehicle Location Tracking Device and Alert Buttons on certain public service vehicles. According to this notification, it is compulsory for certain public service vehicles to be equipped with vehicle location tracking device and one or more panic/emergency buttons, which would be fitted by manufacturer or their dealer or the respective operator.

This information was given by Minister of State for Women & Child Development, Smt Krishna Raj in reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
