The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has announced the prohibition all kinds of E-Cigarettes in the Indian market. The ban on production, manufacturing, import, export, transport, sale, or even distribution, storage and advertisement will come into force with immediate effect.
Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) also popularly known as E-cigarettes has been under government’s surveillance since a long time. Last year an advisory report was introduced by the Union Ministry of Family and Health Care to curb the manufacturing and sale of E-cigarettes, to prevent their addiction among youths. It has been argued several times that the product should fall under the definition of Drugs under Section 3(b) of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act.
According to the ordinance passed by the government, the possession of E-cigarette will be punishable with imprisonment of 6 months and a fine of Rs. 5,00,000.
