Proper understanding of religion need of hour City reporter GUWAHATI, Nov 23 – “In the changing dimensions of terrorism, and fundamental or religious terrorism emerging as the deadliest of all, it is important for the people to learn about their own religion properly, as none of the religions teaches violence,” said Justice IA Ansari, judge of Gauhati High Court, on the concluding day of the national seminar organised by the legal fraternity. Speaking on the topic, ‘Terrorism and human rights’, Justice Ansari elaborately dwelt on the national and international scenario of terrorism and the procedures to deal with it in some of the developed nations like USA and UK vis-à-vis India. “Religion misunderstood and misinterpreted, gives birth to the religious fundamentalism which is harmful to both humanity and religion,” he said, adding that before going to comment on other’s religion, one should properly understand one’s own religion, and that growing intolerance among various religions is becoming a major cause of concern for civil society. He further stressed that any law to be made in the country to tackle with terrorism should be impartial. Speaking on the occasion, Justice SN Phukan, former judge, Supreme Court of India, stated that Article 21 of the Indian Constitution is the backbone of human rights. He asserted that inculcating human values in the family is the beginning of the concept of human rights. Defining the role of advocates of human rights, the former chairman of Assam State Human Rights Commission said that the bar associations of different places can help one another by forming small groups. He also asked the advocates to extend their help to the victims of terrorism. Justice AP Mishra, former judge of the Supreme Court of India and chairman of Legal Education Committee, BCI said that the advocates should always respect their noble profession. “If we are untruthful in our lives, we can’t expect true justice to flourish,” he added. “Stringent laws can be introduced to handle one or two incidents of terrorism, but in order to uproot terrorism, preventive measures should be taken,” he further added. Wise Imran, advocate of Gauhati High Court, Dr Bhuban Barua of Gauhati University, Dr Ruma Bordoloi, Principal of NRF Law College and SD Sarma, Head of Department (Law), Assam University Silchar also spoke on the occasion.
