On Monday, the US President told the director -general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, that he would permanently end all funding to the organization if it did not “commit to substantive improvements within the next 30 days,” according to a copy of a letter he posted to Twitter late Monday night. President Trump wrote that the US would reconsider its member to the WHO since the organization was “so clearly not serving America’s interests”. It is reported that USA contributes somewhere between $400 to $500 million annually to the WHO. If what President Trump says actually ends up happening, this could severely hamper WHO’s working capacity.
Throughout the letter, the US President referred to WHO and its failure to act towards the Chinese authorities in the view of the recent pandemic. He called out WHO as it had “failed to publicly call on China to allow for an independent investigation into the origins of the virus, despite the recent endorsement for doing so by its own Emergency Committee.” It was further alleged by the President that the WHO “has been curiously insistent on praising China for its alleged transparency.”
