OVERVIEW
Even if Donald Trump decides to run for office again, his ban from the social media platform Twitter is going to continue.
Ned Segal, Twitter’s chief financial officer during an interview said that the former president is permanently blocked from Twitter. He added that the policies of Twitter are very clear about this.
The chief financial officer (CFO) also said that twitter policies are designed to ensure that people do not encourage violence, and if anyone does so then they are removed from the service and the policies do not allow them to return. He was also clear that these policies are the same for everyone.
WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND?
The statement that Trump will not be allowed to come back on Twitter was made while Trump’s impeachment trial was taking place in the Senate. Impeachment was happening on the grounds that he had kindled an insurrection with his provocative persuasions at a rally in Washington right before the breach of the US Capitol by a mob on January 6th.
The former president had tweeted critical remarks when he was impeached last year. But both times he refused to appear at the trial in his own defense.
The move to ban Trump from Twitter was unprecedented. Before this, the social media platform had blocked his account temporarily on the grounds that his tweets were contributing to an elevated risk of violence.
WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?
Jack Dorsey, CEO also said that the action to suspend Donald Trump from Twitter was not wrong. Although he expressed worry over the precedent set by this action.
The former President has also been banned on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Facebook has asked its Oversight Board to decide whether his access can be restored or not.
