‘Let No One Die Of Hunger’: Allahabad HC Quashes UP Govt Order Providing Preference To Self-Help Groups In Allotment Of Fair Price Shops

The Allahabad High Court has quashed an order issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on July 7, 2020, that gave preference to self-help groups in the allocation of fair price shops at the expense of all other groups.

The impugned GO seeks to establish a "monopoly" in favour of Self-help Groups that typically have a "poor legal identity" for the purposes of fixing transparency, and therefore any such body is susceptible to "worsen" the artefacts of the Public Distribution System instead of bringing about any change, according to a single bench led by Justice Attau Rahman Masoodi.
