FIR Against Actor Munmun Dutta For Casteist Remark Stayed By Supreme Court

The Supreme Court put a stay on the investigation against actor Munmun Dutta over a casteist remark made by her in a video posted on social media. The Vacation Bench, which consisted of Justice Hemant Gupta and V Ramasubramanian, directed that all separate FIRs be consolidated into one. It refused to curb the filing of FIRs in the future and said that Munmun Dutta was free to approach the court regarding the same. The actor is being represented by Senior Advocate Puneet Bali.

Madras HC: Criminal Contempt Initiated Against Advocate For Sharing ‘Derogatory’ WhatsApp Audio Messages Against Judge

The Madras High Court has initiated proceedings of criminal contempt against an advocate who had shared derogatory messages about a judge via WhatsApp audio files. After noting the derogatory remarks made against him, Justice M Dhandapani initiated suo moto contempt proceedings. It was also noted that such acts could not be left unnoticed as it would send out wrong signals.

Allahabad HC: Plea For Disposing Dead Bodies Buried Near River Ganga Rejected

The Allahabad High Court refused to deal with a petition seeking the disposal of dead bodies buried near the River Ganga. The Bench hearing the matter consisted of Justice Prakash Padia and Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav. Counsel Pranvesh had pleaded that the State of Uttar Pradesh performed the cremation according to the religious rites and put a stop to the practice of burial of bodies near the Ganga.

Mamata Banerjee Objects To Justice Kausik Chanda Hearing Election Petition

West Bengal’s Chief Minister has written to the Additional Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Rajesh Bindal. The letter requested him to assign her another judge, apart from Justice Kausik Chanda, to hear her election petition. The election petition challenges Suvendhu Adhikari’s win in the Nandigram district. The reason behind the request for reassignment remains that Justice Kausik Chanda had also been a former BJP member and is yet to be confirmed as a Permanent Judge.

SC: HC Judgement Not To Be Treated As Precedent; Notice Issued To Delhi police Appeal

The Supreme Court has clarified that the bail granted to the student activists is not being interfered with. It noted that the impugned judgement is however not to be treated as a precedent until the matter was completely decided. A Vacation Bench consisting of Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice V Ramasubramanian said that the Delhi HC judgement raised doubts about the pan-India application of the UAPA as its scope had been narrowed down.
