- On 11 September 2021, Supreme Court Judge Justice D.Y Chandrachud inaugurated e-filing stations on the premises of Orissa High Court for lawyers of the High Court Bar Association.
- The inauguration, was conducted through a video conference, and the Justice also inaugurated a record room digitization centre and a paperless bench in the high court.
- He explains that a paperless court is a court which functions without any physical records or books. All court documents are digitized, and technology is used for court proceedings as well.
- The initiative will have a positive impact on the environment, along with a speedy delivery of justice as time and resources needed for management of physical courts will greatly reduce. Further he commented on how the communication portal will instantly communicate orders of the High court to the subordinate courts.
- He appreciated this step taken by the Orissa High court, saying this will reduce the apprehension among the members of the bar to embrace newer technology, and make the transition to a virtual environment fairly smooth.
- In his speech he observed that, the pushback on technological advancement in the legal space is natural, as these alter well established practices.
- He understands that a change is needed in the mindset of both the lawyers and judges, since he too was hesitant to shift to a digital model at first.
- But at the same time, he believes that the lawyers and judicial officers will soon realise that these initiates will make their lives less complex and alleviatethe work load.
