CJI: KASAB NEEDS A LAWYER FOR PRPER TRIAL 12/18/2008 Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan underlined the need of providing a lawyer to a convict to defend himself and for a proper trial by court. He was referring to the lone arrested terrorist of 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Ajmal Amir Kasab. ‘I don’t think he will go undefended. Even for helping the court for a proper trial, assistance of a lawyer is required’. ‘What role he has played will come to light if there is a fair trial. Somebody will have to defend. It shall not be one-way traffic,’ the Chief Justice added. ‘We should have strong laws. But it should take care of human vales. Strict law is good. I am in favour of it, but how the law should be it is for the Parliament to discuss and deliberate. People of the country should feel safe to live in the country,’ he added. Tougher laws are needed to tackle terror but human rights vales should also be taken care of, Mr Balakrishnan said.
