SINHALA COUPLE REMANDED TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY Rameswaram (PTI): A Sinhalese couple, who arrived here along with a batch of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, have been remanded to judical custody by a local court. The two, who recently got married, fled from Colombo to Tamil-dominated Vavuniya after their marriage fearing reprisals from their parents who disapproved of their wedding, Police Inspector Tyagarajan told PTI. The girl Sharuha Bilkani (18) has been lodged at the Tiruchirappalli Central Prison while her husband Dhusara Chandana(30) in Madurai Central prison. The couple were arrested under the Indian Passport Act for not possessing valid documents. Sharuha belonged to a rich family and fell in love with Dhusara who was teaching her driving. The parents of both had opposed the marriage, forcing them to leave for Vavuniya where Dhusara's friend was staying. Officials said refugee status could not be granted to the Sinhalas and that was another reason for shifting them to prison.
