CALCUTTA HC GRANTS BAIL TO PAPPU IN RIZWANUR RAHMAN'S DEATH CASE 12/24/2008 Calcutta High Court granted bail to Syed Moinuddin alias Pappu, in the Rizwanur death case. Justice Debi Prasad Sengupta granted bail to Pappu after his lawyer pleaded before the bench that he was not directly involved in the death of Rizwanur Rahman, the son-in-law of industrialist Ashok Todi. Pappu was remanded to judicial custody by a city court nearly two months ago after CBI charged him with accepting a bribe from Mr Todi to annul the marriage of Rizwanur with Todi’s daughter Priyanka. In a chargesheet CBI accused Pappu, a neighbour of Rizwanur and a real estate agent, of taking about Rs 1 million to exert pressure on Rizwanur for leaving his wife. Earlier his bail plea was rejected by lower courts. Meanwhile, Ashok Todi was taken to a state-run hospital for treatment today after he complained of chest pain. He was then shifted to the jail on advice of the hospital authorities. Todi has, however, applied before the Court for shifting him to a private hospital having facilities in southern part of the city and Salt Lake. Todi told the Court that he was feeling unwell in the jail and needed admission to the private hospital for treatment. Mr Todi is in judicial custody from December 1. His brother Pradip Todi’s bail was rejected by the high court two days ago. UNI
