Delhi HC: Petitioner Seeks Basic Facilities In Metro Rail

1/10/2009

Petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking direction to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Delhi Government(NCT) to provide drinking water and toilet facilities for commuters in Metro trains.

The petitioner, an NGO, Voice of India, stated that in December 2007 the organisation had sent a representation to the Delhi government and the DMRC seeking basic facilities in the trains but did not receive any satisfactory reply.

The NGO President Dhanesh Ieshdhan said in addition to the lack of toilet facility in the train and no drinking water facicily for the commuters.

Seeking that the DMRC provide these facilities within two months time, the petitioner alleged that the corporation has failed to make special seating arrangements for the senior citizens.

Besides, the NGO has raised questions over the security in Metro stations. "There is absence of baggage screening or scanning machines and the metal detecting wooden-frames through which a traveller passes before reaching a platform are also defective", it alleged.

The petitioner also sought that the court constitute a committee in the form of a nodal agency to look into the necessary facilities to be provided to the commuters in Metro trains.
