SC Orders States/UT's To File Report On Implementation Of Labour Law 1/13/2009 Taking serious note of the non-implementation of the Labour Laws enacted for the welfare of construction workers, the Supreme Court directed the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories to file a compliance report by May 2009. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal issued the directions on the basis of the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioner National Campaign Committee (Construction Labour). The petition contended that several states have not cared to implement the Labour Laws 1996, which were aimed at providing economic and social security to the labour employed in the building construction. As per the laws, every registered construction labour is entitled to compensation in case of death or injury sustained by him/her de to work-related mishaps. After paying a registration fee of Rs 200 per year, the children of the workers are entitled to free education and there is also provision for medical treatment of the worker and his family members.
