The Ansal brothers were sentenced to two years imprisonment for an offence of criminal negligence by the trial court. The Delhi High Court, however, reduced their sentence to one year. Senior counsel Ram Jethmalani mentioned the petitions for urgent hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal. The apex court will consider on January 23 their application for suspension of sentence and their release on bail. During the pendency of the appeal in the High Court, the Supreme Court had cancelled their bail and they were sent to jail along with two of their employees. One of them has died. Fifty-nine people, including women and children, were suffocated to death when Uphaar theatre in Green Park in south Delhi went up in flames in 1997. UNI
