Madras HC Directs Dean, Medical College To Examine Woman Prisoner 1/15/2009 The Madras High Court has directed the Dean, Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, to examine a 55-year-old woman prisoner, who was allegedly beaten up in the prison, and provide her with medical treatment, if required, and file a report on January 19. A division Bench of Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and R Subbiah directed the Superintendent of the Special Prison for Women, Vellore, to examine the prisoner, submit a detailed report and also file a counter. In his petition filed by counsel M Radhakrishnan, petitioner P Pugalenthi, an advocate, submitted that he went to the Special Prison for Women, Vellore, on January five to meet his client, S Nalini, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. She informed him that Saradha, who had been remanded by the Judicial Magistrate-IV, Vellore, was lodged in the prison. While coming into her cell, she was alleged to have clandestinely taken with her Rs 5,000. Fearing detection, she handed over the sum to an inmate. Later, when she demanded the money back, the prisoner refused to return it. When Saradha told her that she would report the matter to the jailor, three convict warders, along with the prisoner, assaulted her. The petitioner submitted that Nalini told him that Saradha was also humiliated. She was crying for help the whole night, but in vain. Mr Pugalenthi prayed that the court issue a direction to the Home Secretary, the Director-General of Prison and the Superintendent, Special Prison for Women, Vellore, to produce Saradha before the court and provide her with treatment. He also prayed that the court direct the respondents to take disciplinary action against those responsible and pay her appropriate compensation. UNI
