Five Get Lifer For Murdering Doctor 21 Jan 2009, 1907 hrs IST, IANS KOLKATA: A West Bengal court on Wednesday sentenced five people to life term for abducting and murdering a doctor in 2006 and acquitted two accused. Jayanta Ghosh, a resident of Salt Lake area in north-eastern Kolkata, was abducted March 6, 2006. His body was found the next day on the banks of the Mayurakshi river in Murshidabad district, about 200 km from here. The Kandi fast-track court in Murshidabad found Swapan Kahar, Raju Mishra, Bablu Pal, Somnath Mistri and Jagannath Nashkar guilty of abducting and murdering Ghosh and gave them life term. According to police records, on the night of March 6, 2006, Mistri and Kahar rushed to Ghosh's Tala Park chamber in central Kolkata and requested him to visit an emergency patient. The doctor agreed and got inside their car but the two handed him over to the other five mid-way. Two ransom calls were made to Ghosh's residence that night demanding Rs.200,000 for his release. He was found dead the next day. Acting on a tip-off, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers nabbed Mistri and Kahar, who confessed they had abducted Ghosh for money. They also told CID the names of the other five involved in the crime. "They killed Ghosh after suspecting that he had identified them and would report them to police if freed," a CID officer told reporters here Wednesday. Ghosh's wife Anima said she was satisfied with the court verdict. "I am satisfied with the court's verdict, but would have been happy if the five were given death sentence," Anima said.
