SC Admits Plea On Mayawati Assault Case 1/21/2009 The Supreme Court admitted a petition filed by late BSP leader Barkhu Ram Verma challenging the Allahabad High Court order, dropping the criminal proceeding against Samajwadi Party leader, including former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and others, for murderous attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in Lucknow in 1995. Ms Mayawati had to lock herself in a room in the guest house to save her life. Several police officers were also involved in the attack. Verma, who had since died, had filed a petition in the High Court seeking directions for registration of criminal cases against SP leaders, including Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shiv Pal Yadav, Dhani Ram Verma, Senior SP leader and former Uttar Pradseh minister Mohd Azam Khan and others for hatching a criminal conspiracy to eliminate BSP Supremo. Ms Mayawati recently admitted one of the main accused and a notorious criminal, Arun Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla, in her party. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam granted leave in the case and admitted the petition for regular hearing. The apex court was not impressed with the contention of the respondents that since the petitioner had died, the petition should be dismissed. UNI
