Delhi HC Poses Query To Petitioner Over Sachar Committee Report 1/22/2009 The Delhi High Court asked a petitioner who saw malicious intentions in implementing the Sachar Committee recommendations to convince the court as to why the government cannot take any measures for welfare of Muslim community. The petitioner, noted lawyer P N Lekhi had stated that while the government was talking about social degradation of the minorities it should take action for the welfare of all the minority communities. He wanted to know why the government has singled out Muslims. A bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Sanjiv Khanna directed the petitioner to file his reply by February 5, the next date of hearing. The Sachar committee report says that according to the 2001 census, the Muslim population in the country was put at 138 million. It estimates that as of 2006 it must have crossed 150 million. The report stated that Muslims have higher population growth rates and higher fertility rates and lower child mortality rates. The perception that there has been considerable ‘international migration’ (an euphemism for illegal Bangladeshi immigration) of Muslims into the country is not correct. But it des not give any status to prove its case that the widespread illegal Bangladeshi immigration into the country has been as inconsequential as it claims it to be, Mr Lekhi said. He contended that implementing the recommendations will cause discontent among other minorities and will attract illegal immigration. Therefore, the government should take a re-look whether the ATR (action taken report) is within the rules. UNI
