32 LABOURERS GET NEW LEASE OF LIFE 23 Jan 2009, 0800 hrs IST, TNN Text: MOHALI: A day after 31 bonded labourers were rescued from a brick kiln in Jouli village of Derabassi, another 32 labourers were rescued from Manakpur Sharif village in Kharar on Thursday. Acting on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court to release seven families from the brick kiln, SDM Rajiv Gupta, Kharar, along with the DSP and labour inspector rescued the workers, who were reportedly not being allowed to return to their native place. The SDM said the landowner had forcibly employed these people on the pretext of having given them advance money. Labour inspector HS Bedi said the labourers wanted to go back to their village but were being stopped by the owner. The rescued people were later escorted up to the railway station, Chandigarh, from where they took a train to Meerut. The brick kiln owner was asked to arrange for their tickets. Officials said the labourers were employed around 15 days back and were paid an advance of Rs 1.40 lakh. However, the employer claimed the labourers had taken more advance from him. A detailed report has been submitted to the DC.
